〈來自救贖的暈眩〉在角色上擬仿台灣的有線電視台對著鏡頭傳道講經的意象,抽除語彙內容,只剩下對著鏡頭給予不斷地點頭微笑。塗抹著彩妝的臉、演講桌上的盆花、道教的念珠、佛教的居士服,對應到在各種不同的佛、道教宗派的場域間跳剪的畫面。各種對於存在於佛教系統裏頭,由於對教理的不同理解,所錯雜模糊的廣義佛學定義在〈來自救贖的暈眩〉中以視覺的手段被實踐。

 

“Dizziness from Redemption” is an imagery that imitates the character who preaches in the Buddhist channel of Taiwanese cable television network.However, I took away the context of the sound and left the character nodding and smiling continuously.A full face of makeup, a vase of flowers on the top of the altar, Taoist prayer beads and Buddhist monk's robe correspond to images of various Buddhist and Taoism locations switching in the backgrounds. Representing the different understanding towards the teachings of the Buddhist system. “Dizziness from Redemption” displays the confusing definitions of Buddhism through its images.

My cartography of Taboos #1

        在製作〈我的禁忌製圖學〉時,我加入在2007年原本預計在泰國上映的《戀愛症候群》電影海報和泰國自由電影抗議活動中的影像。這個上映計畫卻在泰國電檢部(組成包括政府官僚以及泰國皇家警察)為它作電影分級制度審查時,要求導演阿比查邦‧魏拉希沙可將劇情中出現和尚彈吉他、玩遙控飛機的畫面刪減掉。這個舉動引發他對泰國政府壓迫民主權利、企圖曲解宗教教義藉以操控人民思想的不滿。同年,他與其他導演組織泰國自由電影運動,在曼谷議會大樓進行多次抗議活動,來抵制電影相關之法律草案。

 

  當我們並置同樣發生於2007年的泰國和台灣兩地,以宗教為名義實行的各種活動,兩個地方呈現出截然不同的樣貌-台灣對於這種廣義佛教定義的理解水平,對比以佛教為國教的泰國在政客們對於思想自由的操弄之下所實行的偏激教義-關於理解信仰,追尋信仰,似乎無關事實,而是尺度

When I am working on “My cartography of Taboos”, I add the poster of the Thailand movie named “Syndromes and a Century” and the images of the scene where they protested for the freedom of Thailand movies. The release plan of this movie was suspended after being reviewed by the Movie Inspection Department (which consisted of government officials and Royal Thai Police). The department asked the director of the movie, Apichatpong Weerasethakul to take out parts of the movie where the monk played the guitar and the toy remote airplane. Apichatpong felt disappointed towards the actions taken by the Thai government. He felt that they wanted to control the minds of the people though misinterpreting religion and the oppressing of democratic rights.  At the same year, Apichatpong and other directors formed the Free Thai Cinema Movement and held many protest events outside the parliament building of Bangkok in order to stop the rating laws from passing. 

 

When we look back at 2007, the religious events that were held between Thailand and Taiwan were totally different. If we compare the understanding level of the general definition of Buddhism in Taiwan with the extreme Buddhism teaching caused by politicians who want to oppress the freedom of thinking in Thailand (Buddhism is a national region in Thailand), we can see that the understanding of faith and the pursuit of belief has nothing to do with the truth, but the measure of taboos instead.
